Welcome to A.J.’s Website

This website was originally built by A.J. back in 2014, and after he died, his domain name was acquired by someone else (my error!). This website has now been re-created in memory of A.J., and we welcome you all.

This is just a glimpse into A.J.’s luge world – a world that he cherished, made friends around the globe, and was simply a very special man.

  • He was 37 years old when he passed away , and was best known as A.J., which stands for Adam Joseph
  • A.J. held a Dual Citizenship with Great Britain and the United States of America.
  • He was named after his British Grandfather  (Alfred Joseph) who served aboard the H.M.S. Sussex for the Royal Navy during World War II
  • His mother is from Canvey Island, England while his dad was from Queens, New York.
  • A.J. became interested in Luge during the 1994 Winter Olympics, and first tried it when he was 13 years old. His love of speed got him hooked immediately into the sport
  • He flew solo in a Cessna 172 when he was 16 years of age at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach Florida.
  • He was also accepted into Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University after high school, but chose to train for the 2006 Olympics which is a year-round commitment.
  • His goal was to become a commercial pilot after his luge career was finished. He did that!
  • He holds the record for the best ever British Luge finish, which was 6th place in the World Cup in Calgary, Canada in 2009. The track where the movie Cool Running’s is based on.
  • He was coached by Thomas Zeitz, a member of the 1984 West German Olympic Team, who without his help, would never have obtained the results he had achieved throughout his career. He was also coached by Mike Howard, who was on the 1984 British Olympic Team and competed against Thomas at that time.
  • He finished in 16th Place in both the 2006, and 2010 Games, and 22nd in the 2018 Games.
  • He suffered a dislocated hip and nerve damage from a crash just 4 months prior to the 2010 Olympics, but made it back in good enough health to compete in Vancouver
  • A.J. luged in both Singles, and Doubles with Ray Thompson, who was in the British Army
  • A.J. graduated from New Rochelle High School
  • A.J. also played in the Rochelle Youth Tackle Football for 4 years
  • AJ`s younger brother Brett also competed in sports for Great Britain and played Baseball for the Great Britain National Team 2011, 2012
